Well, howdy there! Let’s talk about this here summer whatchamacallit… solstice, yeah, that’s it. And somethin’ ’bout them tarot cards too. For 2024, mind you.

Now, I ain’t no fancy pants reader or nothin’, but I heard tell this summer solstice thingy is a big deal. Longest day of the year, they say. Sun’s all high up in the sky, showin’ off, I reckon. And these cards, well, they supposed to tell ya somethin’ or other.
So, this lady on the radio, she was jabberin’ ’bout a “Summer Solstice Tarot Spread.” Sounded like a whole lotta hooey to me at first, but then she started talkin’ ’bout settin’ intentions and gettin’ clarity. And I thought, “Well, shoot, maybe I could use a little clarity in my life.” Lord knows, this old brain ain’t what it used to be.
Anyways, she said you gotta put that Sun card, the one with the big ol’ shiny sun on it, right smack in the middle. Before you even shuffle them cards, mind you. Then, you mix ’em up good and proper, like you’re shufflin’ a deck of playin’ cards, only slower and more… I dunno… mysterious-like.
Then, you lay them cards out in a special way. This lady called it a “compass spread.” Sounded fancy, but it’s just like makin’ a cross, kinda. One card up top, one down low, one on each side. And then a few more here and there. I ain’t got it all memorized, you see.
- Card number one, she said, that’s about your goals. What you hopin’ to get done this summer, I guess.
- Card number two, that’s about what’s stoppin’ ya. Like, maybe you’re too busy watchin’ them soap operas to get off the couch. That’s my problem, anyways.
- Card number three, that’s about what you can do to fix things. Like, maybe turn off the TV and go weed the garden. Somethin’ like that.
- Card number four, that’s about your feelings. Are you happy? Sad? Mad as a hornet? The cards will tell ya, apparently.
And so on and so forth. There’s a card for your strengths, your weaknesses, your opportunities, and even what the future might hold. It’s all a bit much for this old gal, to be honest. But I figured, what the heck, I’ll give it a whirl.
So, I dug out my grandma’s old tarot deck. Been sittin’ in a box in the attic for years. Dustier than a dirt road in July. And I shuffled them cards, just like the lady said. And I laid ’em out, tryin’ to follow her instructions.
Now, I ain’t gonna lie, some of them cards didn’t make a lick of sense. Pictures of swords and cups and all sorts of weird stuff. But a few of ’em, well, they kinda hit home. Like the one that said I need to be more patient. Lord knows, that’s the truth. I got the patience of a gnat sometimes.
And the one that said I need to focus on what I really want. That got me thinkin’. What do I really want? Well, I want a garden full of tomatoes and beans. I want my grandkids to come visit more often. And I want to finally finish that quilt I started last winter. Simple things, I guess. But they matter to me.
So, this whole Summer Solstice Tarot Spread thing, maybe it ain’t so crazy after all. Maybe it’s just a way to get yourself thinkin’ about what’s important. To set your mind on somethin’ good and then go out there and make it happen. That’s what I’m gonna try to do, anyways. This summer, I’m gonna focus on my garden, my family, and that darn quilt. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll even figure out what all them swords and cups are supposed to mean.
And you know, this whole thing about the sun being at its highest point, that makes a lick of sense when you think about getting your goals out there where the sun can shine on them. Makes ‘em grow big and strong, like my tomatoes hopefully will. This summer solstice sounds like a good time for planting seeds, both real ones in the ground and the kind in your heart and mind too. Gotta get those desires out in the open, let ‘em breathe and get strong.

So, if you’re lookin’ for a little guidance this summer, maybe give this tarot thing a try. Or maybe just sit on the porch, sip some lemonade, and think about what you want outta life. Either way, it’s a good time to make a plan and get started. The days are long, the sun is shining, and there’s a whole lotta summer stretchin’ out in front of us.
Anyways, that’s all I got to say about that. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go water my petunias. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll sneak in another episode of my soap opera. Don’t tell nobody, though.
