Okay, so I’ve been wanting to spice up my garden a bit, and I had this idea to make some, like, rustic-looking signs. I saw some cool metal art online and thought, “Hey, I could probably do that!” So, I decided to try making metal goat signs. Why goats? Because I love goats, and they’re just fun, okay?

Getting Started
First, I needed some metal. I didn’t want to buy anything fancy, so I went around to some scrap yards. It took a couple of tries, but I finally found some old sheet metal that was perfect – kinda rusty in spots, which was exactly the vibe I wanted.
Next up, the design. I’m no artist, so I kept it simple. I basically sketched out a few goat shapes on paper until I had one I liked. Nothing too detailed, just a basic outline.
Cutting the Metal
This was the tricky part. I borrowed a pair of metal shears from my neighbor – HUGE scissors, basically. It took some muscle, I’m not gonna lie. I carefully cut along the lines of my goat sketch, transferring the shape onto the metal. It wasn’t perfect, but again, I was going for rustic, so a few jagged edges were totally fine.
- Tip 1: Wear gloves! I learned this the hard way after a few nicks. Metal is sharp, who knew?
- Tip 2: If the metal is really thick, you might need something stronger than shears. I think some people use, like, plasma cutters? But that sounded way too intense for me.
Smoothing and Finishing
Once I had my goat shapes cut out, I used a metal file to smooth down any really sharp edges. I didn’t want anyone (or any actual goats) getting hurt.
Then came the fun part – making them look even more rustic. I took a hammer and just kinda banged on them in a few spots, giving them some texture and dents. I also used some sandpaper to rough up the surface a bit.
Mounting the Signs
I wanted to be able to stick these in the ground, so I needed some stakes. I found some old metal rods at the scrap yard (score!), and my neighbor helped me weld them onto the back of the goats. Welding is definitely something I need to learn more about – it looked pretty cool (and hot!).
Finally, I stuck them in the ground around my garden. And you know what? They look pretty awesome! They’re definitely unique, and they add that quirky, handmade touch I was going for.
So, yeah, that’s how I made my metal goat signs. It was a fun little project, and I’m pretty proud of how they turned out. Maybe I’ll try making some other animals next… chickens, maybe?
